Jira ticket not showing on the board? 7 checks

You created a ticket, or someone sent you its key, and it opens fine. But it is nowhere on the board. Nothing is lost: a board only shows what its settings let it show, and one of these checks will find it.

An office worker looks for a missing ticket that sits beside the board instead of on it.

The short answer

A board is a filtered view, not the whole space. A ticket can exist and still be hidden from the board for one of a few reasons: it is in the backlog rather than the active sprint, a quick filter is on, the board's filter leaves it out, its status is not mapped to any column, it finished long enough ago to drop off, or you cannot see it.

Work through the checks below in order. The first three are things you can check yourself; from check 4 on, you may need a board admin.

Check 1: Is it in the active sprint?

On a scrum board, the board shows the active sprint. Atlassian describes the backlog page as showing the space's work items grouped into a backlog and sprints, and work only reaches the board when it is in the sprint that is running. A new ticket that nobody added to the sprint waits in the backlog.

Fix: open the Backlog tab and look for it. If it belongs in the current sprint, drag it into the sprint section, after checking with whoever plans the sprint (see backlog vs sprint).

Check 2: Is a quick filter or person filter on?

Quick filters are buttons above the board that narrow it down to the work items that match them. If your board shows people's avatars above it, clicking one filters the board to that person's work. Either one hides everything else, and it is easy to forget one is on.

Fix: clear every quick filter and person filter, and empty the search box above the board.

Check 3: Are you on the right board?

A board can pull work from more than one space, and your team may use more than one board. If the ticket's key starts with letters you do not expect, it may belong to another space and another board.

Fix: open the ticket and check which space it is in. The board vs project guide explains how the two relate.

Check 4: Does the board's filter include it?

A company-managed board has a board filter, a saved query that decides which work items the board shows. Atlassian's troubleshooting notes that board filters based on assignee, team or work type can make work disappear. A board for "the app team" might only show items with a certain component or label, so a ticket without it never appears.

Fix: compare the ticket with the tickets that do show. If they all share a label, component or work type that yours lacks, add it. If you cannot tell, ask the board admin to check the board's filter.

Check 5: Is its status mapped to a column?

Each column holds one or more statuses. If a status is not mapped to any column, Atlassian's column help says that unmapped statuses hide work items in both the board view and the backlog view. This happens when someone adds a new status to the workflow but not to the board.

Fix: open the ticket and read its status. If no column on the board matches it, ask a space or board admin to map it. They do this under More actions (•••) > Board settings > Layout > Columns by dragging the status from the Unmapped statuses panel into a column.

Check 6: Did it finish a while ago?

Finished work leaves the board after a time. Atlassian's board help says that on a board without sprints, work items in Done are removed from the board automatically after 14 days. On company-managed kanban boards, the time is a setting, and the kanban board's default sub-filter also removes work in a fix version that has been released. On a scrum board, finished work leaves when the sprint is completed.

Fix: search for the ticket by its key instead. Finished work is still in Jira; it is just no longer on the board.

Check 7: Can you see it at all?

If the ticket's key does not open for you, the problem is access, not the board. Jira only shows you work items in spaces you have permission to browse.

Fix: ask the person who sent you the key to check which space it is in, and ask that space's admin for access.

Two special cases

  • Subtasks. You cannot create a subtask from the board columns, and boards can show subtasks grouped under their parent. If you are looking for a subtask, open its parent ticket.
  • Epics. Epics are a different case again: on some boards they appear in a panel or as swimlanes rather than as cards. See epic not showing on the board.

Atlassian's longer troubleshooting list for Jira Data Center adds causes that only an admin can fix, such as reindexing. On Jira Cloud, the checks above cover what a team member can look at.

Practise finding things on a board

Most "missing" tickets are found with search and filters. Agile Board Practice has a lesson on finding anything, where you search by key and by word and clear the search again, and a lesson on reading a busy board with the people filter, both with feedback on every step.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Jira ticket not showing on the board?

It may be in the backlog instead of the active sprint, hidden by a quick filter, left out by the board's filter, in a status no column is mapped to, or finished long enough ago to drop off. Check them in that order.

What does unmapped status mean in Jira?

It is a status that is not assigned to any column on the board. Atlassian's help says work items in unmapped statuses are hidden from both the board and the backlog.

Why did my Done ticket disappear from the kanban board?

Boards without sprints remove Done work after a set time, 14 days by default per Atlassian's board help. Search for the ticket's key to find it.

Where is my new ticket if it is not on the board?

On a scrum board, a new ticket that is not added to the active sprint waits in the backlog. Open the Backlog tab to find it.

Who can fix a board that hides tickets?

Clearing filters is something you can do yourself. Changing the board's filter or mapping a status to a column needs a space admin or board admin.
